Slievenamon Golf Club
|
Situated in the scenic and picturesque surroundings of the Slievenamon mountain range, Slievenamon Golf Club, Lisronagh, is a welcoming and friendly golf club where everyone from beginners to seasoned players are made feel at ease. Proprietors, Kevin and Margaret Lalor, would like to welcome you to their golf club, which is one of the newest and most progressive in the area. Construction of the course commenced in July 1997 and was seen as a direct response to what was generally regarded as a need for an additional golf course in Clonmel and many of the surrounding areas. The course itself was laid down in Autumn '97 using the most modern strains of grasses available and opened in July '98. Located approximately five miles from Clonmel on the main Clonmel to Fethard road, Slievenamon Golf Club is easily accessible and provides ample car parking and full clubhouse facilities. Great consideration was given to the surrounding countryside and features of the land when designing the layout of the 90 acre, 18-hole, par 62 course. A one-acre Ring Fort has remained untouched and there is a preservation order on the 4th as it is a natural habitat for various wildlife. Add to that, the beauty of the Slievenamon Mountains overlooking the course. It is difficult not to be impressed with the magnificent greens at Slievenamon Golf Club and it should be noted that they are exceptionally well maintained. The greens are of a very high standard and all greens and tee boxes are raised, leaving the course largely playable all year round. The clubhouse is staffed at all times for refreshments or any assistance required. A major boost to the club came in Autumn 1999 when the club was officially affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland (G.U.I.). Association with the GUI greatly raises the profile of the club and also the credibility of the club within golfing circles. Bernie Hynes and Mick Cashman offered much appreciated assistance with regard to the affiliation and Kevin and Margaret and all at the club are very grateful for this. When considering a course for affiliation to the GUI several aspects are taken into account including the design and layout of the course. Slievenamon Golf Course is a relatively flat course and considered not too difficult for the beginner but at the same time challenging for the experienced player. It has been said, of the course, that it is easy to walk and difficult to play! At present Dinny Burke holds the course with a par 65. Anyone interested in challenging this record can do so by calling the club and arranging a game with a member! Due to the friendly, relaxed and un-intimidating atmosphere, Slievenamon Golf Club has attracted a huge amount of beginners since its opening. The dedication of the owners is reflected in the fact that a huge amount of income generated goes straight back into the. Continuous improvement is a priority. Only the most modem, high quality equipment available is used at Slievenamon Golf Club. The club purchased a computer, which is linked to the GUI records that store the handicap of individual players. It is hoped that all golf clubs in Ireland will be using this system in the near future and therefore, a link can be established enabling players to have their handicap readjusted and monitored at most clubs. Players will be issued with an identity card which they can present at golf clubs using the system and in turn the card will be swiped giving the club relevant details about the player. Kevin and Margaret acknowledge that without help of many people over the early years the establishment of Slievenamon Golf Club may haven been more difficult. They are very grateful to everyone who has contributed to the success of the club including members, committees and various advisors including the late Gus Kenrick who wass an uncle of the current club secretary, Brendan Kenny. Gus was formerly secretary of St. Andrews Golf Club in Scotland which is one of the most renowned courses in the world. We wish Kevin and Margaret and all at Slievenamon Golf Club every success for the future. |
