Subject: Thomas (Neal) (Neill)(O'Neill)

Message Detail:
I'm trying to trace the family of my ggrandfather, Thomas O'Neill. He joined the 87th regiment of the British army in 1852 and gave his age as 18(in a 1901 Canadian census, he gave his birthdate as 1836). He was in the army under the name Thomas Neal. He signed his discharge papers "Thomas Neill" and by 1901 in Nova Scotia he was going by O'Neill. All of his children who emigrated to the U.S. went by O'Neill. So I'm not sure what his surname really was. His birthplace is listed in his army papers as the parish of Cloneen near Fethard. He was Roman Catholic. I don't understand what this entry means. I know that parishes are civil divisions in Ireland, but is there a little town or village in Cloneen since it lists his birthplace as near Fethard? Thank you
