An interesting little function took place on Thursday evening, August 21st, 1913, at Stokes' Hotel, Fethard. It consisted in the presenting to Miss Mary Heffernan, the Manageress of the Hotel, of an Address and generous Purse on behalf of her many friends from far and near. The Address tells the occasion and the cause.

ADDRESS
To Miss Mary Heffernan,
From her Friends in and around Fethard.
We come, on behalf of dozens of your friends and admirers, to present you with this Address and Purse of Sovereigns. The occasion is the change of proprietorship of the famed establishment, Stokes' Hotel, with which you have been so long and so honourably associated, and the reason of our coming is to mark the universal respect which your splendid personality, your rare integrity, your business capacity, your all-conquering tact have secured for you from all sections of the community, and especially from those who, like us, have close and intimate knowledge of your qualities and doings. Your life is a record of self-sacrifice and devotion to duty. We are proud to proclaim that, humble girl though you are, by an honest and honourable life you have not merely achieved success at business but likewise commanded the respect of the clergy and laity, of the masses and the classes alike. May your future be in keeping with your past.

Several interesting speeches were made. The visitors were graciously and generously entertained, and a very pleasant afternoon was spent, when differences of politics and religion were forgotten in the general desire to honour Miss Heffernan.
