RIVER BANK CLEAN-UP
Well done to members of Fethard Youth Club who have taken time out from their Saturday night meeting to collect litter from the Clashawley river banks and walkway. On last Saturday night alone they removed seven full sacks of rubbish. The members said they will continue their ‘clean-up’ project until their club closes for the summer break at the end of May.

FETHARD ATHLETIC CLUB
The county track and field championships took place last weekend in Scanlon Park Kilkenny. Fethard A.C. was represented by 40 juvenile athletes who competed with distinction to bring home a total of 15 individual medals and two sets of relay medals.
This result was a well-earned reward for the hard work done in training since Christmas. Our top performers were county champions, John Lalor who won the under-12, 65m hurdles and Michelle Ryall who took gold in the 80m sprint and silver in the long jump. Best all round athlete was Hannah Trehy who won four individual medals, bronze in the under-12, 80m, 600m and long jump and silver in the 65m hurdles.
Darragh Dwyer brought home three individual medals, silver in the under-13 600m and long jump and bronze in the 80m. Wayne Laslett won silver in the under-15, 800m and bronze in the 200m and Shane Gorey was third in the boys under-14, 800m. Our boys under-13 relay team of Adam Lyons, Darragh Dwyer, Owen Healy and John Lalor combined well to take bronze in the final of the 4x100m and the girls under-12 team of Aisling Dwyer, Hannah Trehy, Michelle Ryall and Aisling O’Connor matched that performance by winning bronze in their 4x100m final.
Club chairman, Miceál McCormack, also had a most productive weekend winning no less than five individual medals in the M55 category, gold in the 100m and long jump and silver in the hammer, javelin and shot.
Meanwhile in the Clonmel Ballygowan 10k, Pat Heffernan continued his current good form by winning the M40 category coming fourth overall in this top class event with an excellent time of 32 min. 05 sec. Next weekend eight of our top juveniles travel to Mosney to represent their county in the cross country finals, best of luck to Mary Gleeson, Ciara O’Connor, Elaine Kennedy, Michael Costello, Aoife O’Gorman, Hannah Trehy, Shane Gorey and Lolo Trehy.

FETHARD LADIES FOOTBALL
History was created in Fethard GAA Park last Sunday when the newly formed Fethard Ladies football team won their first ever match. The team has been formed for a little over a month in Fethard and much thanks must go to Tom Anglim, Conor McCarthy, Aidan Fitzgerald and Geraldine McCarthy for all their coaching and organisation.
Against stiff opposition (Moyne-Templetuohy) in this championship game, the many spectators who attended were treated to a very exciting match. Due to a great contribution from everyone on the team the final scoreline was Fethard 2-8 and Moyne Templetuohy 1-2
The team was: Jenny Fogarty, Kate Hanrahan, Ailish O’Connell, Sandra Maher, Valerie Colville, Marie Holohan, Rebecca Morris, Jacqui Stokes Freyne, Barbara Ryan, Ailish Sheehan (0-2), Vanessa O Donnell (1-2), Meela Noonan, Edel Fitzgerald, Sharon O’Meara, Jennifer Keane (1-4). Subs: Cathy Watters, Tracey Walsh, Sarah-Mai Ahearne, Helen Frewen, Lisa Ryan, Clodagh Blake, Lisa McCormack, Lisha O’Connell, Stephanie Fitzgerald, Gillian O’Connell and Mary Gorey.
The Ladies Football team would also like to say a great big “Thank You” to Bob Grant of Grants Pub, Main Street, Fethard who has very generously offered to sponsor a set of jerseys for the ladies.

FETHARD COMMUNITY SPORTS FIELD LTD.
Further meeting regarding fundraising took place in Tirry Centre on Wednesday last. There was a small attendance at this meeting, which is never surprising when fundraising is involved. However, members of the community will get a chance to redeem themselves and show their appreciation of the generosity of Coolmore Stud and their support of the community sports field when sponsorship cards will be delivered to every house in the parish in the near future. This sponsorship will be for a community walk around Ballybough on Friday June 27th commencing at 6.30pm and finishing with fun events in the sports field. Some well known personalities will be invited to attend. There will be a special sellers draw for all families who return a full card. Rugby and Athletic Clubs have kindly donated prizes worth €100 each to this draw. This is a community effort and the whole parish are expected to get involved. There are big plans for this field, which will be of tremendous benefit to everybody.

FETHARD YOUTH CLUB
As our year draws to an end it is great to say that on Saturday night the club was able to recognise achievement once again. The ‘Copping On’ project ended with the presentation of certificates of participation. The certificates were given at the end of the last session, which was hosted by Des Bell, Juvenile Liaison Officer for the Garda Siochana. We would like to thank especially Noelle O'Dwyer who facilitated the project, as Tipperary Regional Youth Service Rural Outreach worker, for her commitment to us by driving from Limerick each Saturday night during the length of the programme and the enthusiasm she showed our young people in the delivery of this project.
Thanks to Des Bell who struck up such a rapport with the young people that they have arranged to have him back for a question time on Saturday the 24th of May.
In receipt of certificates were: Tom Gilpin, Susie Harvey, Ashley McCormack, Sarah Kennedy, Tracy Coady, Helen Frewen, Kyle O'Donnell, Brian Conway, Fintan Maher, William O'Brien and Chris Whyte.
We would also like to congratulate Kyle O'Donnell and Helen Frewen who have been accepted by the Tipperary Regional Youth Service and the Patrician Presentation Secondary School as Student Liaison Officers. Good luck in your posts for the next academic year.
Further to group discussions as to how to offer some return service to the Fethard Community for their support over the last three years the club members began a 'clean up' of the ballroom area and the river bank. The rubbish collection will continue for the next three weeks until summer closure. On Saturday night alone the members of the club collected no less than seven black bags of litter, cans and bottles including large pieces of foam and a full front fender of a car!
The club is presently in contact with a youth group in the Loire valley of France with regard to an exchange which will encompass outdoor activities, sport and dance. We hope to be able to run with this during either the February or Easter break of 2004. We are also working with a Danish youth group for summer next year, they are interested in art and theatre. We had hoped to have an exchange this summer but the time constraints on all involved parties were just too strict.
Our EVS project is still moving forward with countries such as Portugal and indeed Slovakia proposing some very interesting projects for our volunteer Emmet Burke.
On a final note, congratulations to the Fethard lads on their resounding victory in Kilsheelan. Great game lads especially the second half. The weather was atrocious but they stormed to victory. Congrats again from everyone in the club.
Club will open as usual on Saturday night 18th May.

FETHARD JUVENILE GAA
It was a busy week for the Juvenile Community Games teams with both under/10 football and under/13 hurling being played. The under/10 team travelled to Cahir in their second game and were very unfortunate not to come away with a win. They played the first half against a very strong wind and a strong Cahir team. They fought well to keep the score down in the first half but were unable to keep it up in the second half. There were some great performances by every member of a very young Fethard team.
The under/13 hurling team also travelled to Cahir on the same evening and came away with a great win and go onto the next round. The team showed much skill and determination and with some great performances by the whole team we wish them well. Well done to Liam, Ian, Martin and Jim.
The under/16s, who have shown some really great performances in previous matches, were unfortunately beaten by St Patricks in the semi-final. Well done to the lads and all involved.
Our under/14s play away to Ardfinnan on Monday next at 7pm. Good luck to the team.
Training for under/14s at 6pm Friday evenings
Training for under/12s at 6pm Tuesday evenings
Training for under/10s at 7pm Tuesday evenings (boys school field)
The Club would like to wish all the young boys and girls who will be receiving their First Holy Communion on Saturday 17th May 2003 a wonderful happy day.

FISHING NEWS
The summer time is coming and the fishing on the Clashawley and Anner Rivers, which has been poor so far, is improving. The Fethard and Killusty Anglers promote their first competition of the season on Sunday next 18th May. The John Sayers Trophy and the Tom O’Shea Cup competitions will be held. All competing anglers are requested to meet at Thorney Bridge at 11am.

ENJOYABLE OUTING
A most enjoyable days outing was had by members of the Hogan Musical Society and friends who travelled by special bus to the popular new musical, ‘Chicago’ at The Point, Dublin, on Sunday last.

ADDRESS SOUGHT
The current address of a Mr Peter O’Brien, formerly from Killusty, is sought by a fellow graduate from UCC in 1953. Enquiries have failed to locate a Peter O’Brien of Killusty in that age group. If you have any information please send it to: Tony Newport, Main Street, Fethard.

ANNIVERSARY CONCERT
Many regular patrons of the Abymill Theatre were of the opinion that the 15th Anniversary Concert on Friday night, 9th May, was one of the best ever staged in the theatre. The performance of the three young ladies of ‘Sopranos’ certainly ranks with the best seen in the Abymill over the years. The varied programme of popular operatic arias, songs from the musical theatre and shows, together with some of our own well-known Irish airs, which can hold their own in any musical situation, had something for certainly everyone. The girls were very well supported by the excellent male voice choir The Gordonaires from Clonmel, and MC Billy McLellan was at his brilliant best. The artistes were given a prolonged standing ovation by the full capacity attendance at the shows conclusion.
Austin O’Flynn, stand up and take a bow! All of us have dreams but very few of us live to see them fulfilled. Austy, who has a life-long association with Fethard dramatics, had a dream that Fethard would one day have its own theatre. He has seen that dream fulfilled in the Abymill. Austy would be the first to admit that without the help of a good committee it would not have been realised. However, Austy has been the driving force behind the success of the Abymill. Throughout the fifteen years, he has selected, casted and produced some top class plays by the Fethard Players Dramatic Society. The Abymill has also been home to many excellent productions by the Hogan Musical Society and School Shows.
Austy has brought a variety of international musical acts to Fethard, The Brass Ensemble of Glasgow University Orchestra, The RTE Chamber Orchestra, The Baroque Quartet; The Irish Ballet Company, The Four Note Orchestra, blues singer Mary Coughlan, the Dowling Celiedh Band from Kilkenny, are just a few of the many. Through his own promotional efforts he has, as on last Friday night, brought full house attendances to music that may not have appealed to many, but following the performance, all who attended left with a appreciation of a different type of music they may not have had already.
Austy will be greatly embarrassed by all this publicity, which he usually shuns. He is proud of his Abymill Theatre, Fethard should also be proud of Austy O’Flynn who has provided such high class entertainment for the people of Fethard and surrounding areas over the years. He hopes to book ‘Sopranos’ to play the Abymill during their ‘Christmas Tour’ later in the year.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING
The next meeting of Fethard and Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday 27th May at 8.30pm in the Tirry Community Centre. The committee have recently met with representatives from Tipperary Leader to discuss projects for the development of the Convent Hall.
