FETHARD NOTES ARCHIVE

Saturday 13th September 2003

Submitted to The Nationalist Newspaper

DEATH OF MANFRED NAUNDORF
The unexpected death of Mr Manfred Naundorf, Killusty, early last week came as a great shock to his neighbours and many friends in the area, especially amongst the farming community. The late Manfred Naundorf, a native of Germany, came to Fethard as a very young man as farm manager of Annesgift Estate. His, of that period, new methods of farming attracted widespread attention. Annesgift’s Dutch owners for instance, pioneered the extensive cultivation of tulip bulbs for export. Visitors travelled great distances to see the beautiful sight of acres of tulips in multi-colour bloom at Annesgift.
Many generations of Fethard schoolchildren earned much appreciated pocket money working “at the bulbs”, where they found Manfred Naundorf a strict but impartial boss. The first batch of students to work “at the bulbs” are now in their early fifties and many are now parents themselves, and quite a few grandparents!
Manfred Naundorf also introduced a revolutionary method of over wintering cattle. Each beast was individually tethered in the vast cattle sheds on the farm, a method completely new at least in this area.
Hw subsequently purchased a farm at Killusty where he farmed vegetables extensively. He supplied many retail vegetable outlets, notably in Clonmel where he ran a greengrocery and restaurant. He also won many prizes in the vegetable section at the Clonmel Horse Show. he was greatly amused one year to find that on taking second prize, the winning entry, which of course he recognised immediately, had been purchased at his Clonmel shop.
Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Giuliani and relatives. Mr Naundorf’s remains were cremated at Newlands Cross Crematorium, Dublin, on Saturday 13th September.

HERITAGE WEEK
The Family Treasure Hunt around the town was a big hit with the fifteen groups that took part on Sunday 7th October. Organised by the Historical Society, it was one of the two events put on for National Heritage Week. Congratulations to Ms M. Moclair, The Grant family and Ms C. Nevin who won vouchers for family meals sponsored by Oriental Gardens, G & T's and The Lantern. Thanks to the sponsors and to the Trail maker.
On Tuesday 9th October a very large turnout followed guide Mary Hanrahan around the Old Town and the night was finished off in great style when the I.C.A. members kindly treated everyone to the very best of tea and cakes.
On Saturday 11th October, the first ever County Tipperary Local History Day will be hosted in the Abymill Theatre by the Fethard Historical Society. This day-long Seminar is for everyone in the County who is interested in, or involved in, Local History (whether in a voluntary or official capacity) to come together to exchange information and expertise for the benefit of all. This is to become an annual event and it will be hosted in a different town every year. In 2004 it will probably be in a town in the North Riding.

JUVENILE GAA CLUB
Our under/11's travelled to Bansha on Saturday morning last and played three great games of ground hurling. We came away with great wins over Cahir and Bansha and the final game against Ballybacon/Grange ended in a very exciting draw. The lads were down three goals in the first half, and with only ten minutes a side being played they had much work to do. Their determination paid off and they managed to score three quick goals to set the game even when the final whistle blew. Well done to the lads.

Fethard will join twelve other Irish towns and cites, which have been published as part of the IHTA series. For further details and online order form visit the following website: http://www.ria.ie/projects/ihta/offer.html

FISHING NEWS
Widely known Cashel angler, Willie McGrath, a prominent member of Fethard & Killusty Angling Club, was winner of the Carrick-on-Suir Angling Club’s annual salmon fishing competition held on the Suir near Carrick on 7th September. Willie, many times amongst the prizewinners in local competitions, was the only angler out of 68 entries to catch two fish on the day. He also finished second in the event last year.
With anglers like Willie McGrath regularly amongst the prizewinners, there must be more to catching fish than just attaching the bait to the line and chucking it into the river!

DAY CARE CENTRE GOLF CLASSIC
Fethard & Killusty Community Council and Day Care Centre would also like to thank AIB Fethard and Fethard Post Office, who were inadvertently omitted from the list published last week of sponsors who supported the recent Golf Classic held at Slievenamon Golf Club.

YOGA CLASSES
Yoga Classes will commence in the ICA Hall on Thursday 18th September. Two classes will take place each night, one at 7pm and the other at 8.30pm. All are welcome.

Now that so many soccer players, both past and present, have taken to the small ball, we are hoping to see many of you take part. For time, please contact: Chris Coen 087 6868991 or Brian Higgins 086 1053304.

GOLF CLASSIC FOR TRUST
A golf classic in aid of TRUST Charity will be held on 3rd and 4th October 2003 at Slievenamon Golf Club. Teams will cost €200 and Tee Box sponsorship €100. Further details of the event can be had by contacting any of the following: Vincent Murphy (Tel: 086 8119625), Frank Purcell (Tel: 087 7805482) or Brendan Kenny at Slievenamon Golf Club (Tel: 052 32213).
Alice Leahy has often said that her childhood in Annesgift, Fethard, Co. Tipperary inspired her to found TRUST – the health and social service for people who are homeless. And the wheel comes full circle in the next couple of weeks when at Slievenamon Golf Course, a golf classic will be held to further the work of that organisation, which though based in Dublin, has its roots here in Tipperary.
Alice believes that her childhood experiences, the people she met growing up and those many walks on the fields at Slievenamon and the surrounding area instilled in her a sense of justice and sensitivity to the outsider that allows her to do the work she does today.
Alice Leahy is director of TRUST, which she was the driving force in setting up in 1975 as a non-judgemental, befriending, social and health service for people who become homeless. Former Chairperson of the Sentence Review Group, Alice is also a writer, commentator, broadcaster and lecturer promoting understanding of the needs of the outsider in our society and daily practical ways to help combat exclusion.
Alice recently edited a new book on the theme of the outsider ‘With Trust in Place’, which will be published by Townhouse in October with contributions from a various cross sections — from writer Maeve Binchy to singer Christy Moore. This is her second book with ‘Not just a bed for the night’ published by Marino in 1995 and written with Anne Dempsey.
A nurse by profession Alice set up the first intensive care unit of its type in Ireland at the request of the Medical Board at the then Royal City of Dublin Hospital in Baggot Street.
Alice also lectures widely to specialist groups and has directly contributed to public policy as a member of various policy bodies such as the Lord Mayor’s Commission on Crime chaired by Justice Michael Moriarty; the Working Party set up by the Minister for Health to look at the care of the disturbed mentally ill; and as a member of the National Crime Forum.
Amongst the various social documentaries over the years Alice has participated in the critically acclaimed television documentary ‘A Fragile City’ about people who become homeless and Trust’s non-judgemental approach, which was broadcast on RTE television.
These efforts have been recognised with several awards over the years including a Person of the Year Award (1988); Carers Award (1992); Lord Mayors Award (1993) and an Honorary Fellowship from the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (1999). Alice sees these awards as recognition of the work of Trust. Information on Trust is available on website: www.trust-ireland.ie

LITTER IMPROVEMENT
We have many times before criticised local students for their lack of civic pride in the manner in which they distribute litter on our streets. We are glad to report that, since the reopening of school, the position has improved a great deal. County Council rubbish bins are filled to overflowing with a marked improvement to the tidiness of our streets. A very big ‘well-done!’ to all concerned.
It will now be up to the local authorities to ensure that the litterbins on the street are maintained and kept emptied. Pride in one’s native place, it has to be said, is the hallmark of a true patriot.
