EMIGRANTS NEWSLETTER
Club secretaries are asked to submit their annual reports for inclusion in this years Emigrant’s Newsletter as soon as possible. Photographs and articles can be handed in to Joe Kenny, Rocklow Road, Fethard. We also remind emigrants to hand in change of addresses or new addresses for those wishing to be added to the mailing list. An up-to-date list is essential to avoid unnecessary postage costs, so please let us know if your children or loved ones living away from home have changed flat or house in the past twelve months.
This year’s annual church gate collection for the Emigrant’s Newsletter will take place in a few weeks time on weekending 25th and 26th October. All donations of €10 or more will be acknowledged in this years issue. If you wish to be acknowledged, please put your donation in an envelope with your name and address or else hand it to Carmel Rice, Brookhill, or Joe Kenny, Rocklow Road.

LOURDES PILGRIMAGE 2004
Anyone interested in travelling on the 2004 pilgrimage to Lourdes and would like to pay their fare by weekly instalments can do so now. Kathleen Barry, Tullamaine, has organised a 30-week saving scheme, commencing on 12th October, where you pay €20 per week and save your fare in time for the trip. FETHARD & KILLUSTY COMMUNITY COUNCIL AGM
The Annual General Meeting of Fethard and Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday 21st October at 9pm in the Tirry Community Centre. Ms Tess Collins, Tenant Liaison Officer with South Tipperary County Council, will meet the committee and representatives of Fethard’s Residents’ Associations before the AGM at 8.30pm.

LOCAL HISTORY DAY PROGRAMME
On next Saturday 11th October, the first ever County Tipperary Local History Day will be hosted in the Abymill Theatre by the Fethard Historical Society. This day-long Seminar is for everyone in the County who is interested in, or involved in, Local History (whether in a voluntary or official capacity) to come together to exchange information and expertise for the benefit of all.
The Programme for the day is as follows:
9.30am: Registration and Tea or Coffee.
10am: Up-date from the Statutory Heritage Agencies, including: Brendan McSherry (Heritage Officer); Stephen Fallon (Conservation Officer); Sarah Gillespie (Museum Curator), Róisin Treacy (Archivist), all from South Tipperary County Council; Martin Maher (County Librarian) and Jean Farrelly (DEHLG, formerly Dúchas) etc. To be followed by a public Discussion.
11.15am: Up-date from Local and County Historical Societies with information on: support and networking (eg. South Tipperary Voluntary and Community Platform); sources of funding (eg. Tipperary Leader); Insurance issues; ideas for the 2004 Seminar etc. To be followed by a public Discussion.
12.30pm: Lunch, a light lunch is included in the booking fee
1.45pm: Special Topic for 2003 ‘Conserving Older Buildings’. This will be a detailed look at the issue of conserving and restoring older buildings. Expert speakers will outline in detail the planning, financial and practical issues involved. The Panel will include Stephen Fallon (Conservation Officer with South Tipperary County Council), Margaret Quinlan (Architect) Garry Gleeson (Builder/Conservator), Barry O’Reilly (Archaeologist). Site visits in the immediate area will also form part of the workshop. To be followed by a public Discussion.
4.00pm: Close and Tea or Coffee.
For those wishing to come only to the afternoon session on restoring old buildings then arrive before 2pm and a fee of €7 will apply, which includes a tea/ coffee break afterwards and a chance to talk to the speakers if you are particularly interested in this topic.

DIED RECENTLY
We record the death of Alice Slattery, Congress Terrace, and formerly of Coolmoyne, who died on Friday 3rd October at Killusty Nursing Home, aged 98. Interment took place in Calvary Cemetery.

COMMUNITY PLAYGROUP OPEN EVENINGS

€1000 HOLIDAY WON in COMMUNITY LOTTO
This was the first week of our now '€1000 Holiday Break' for those who matched three numbers with the extra bonus number drawn on Tuesday night. We are delighted to say it was 'First Time Lucky' for T.J. Sheehan, Killusty, who won the prize on the first week of its launch.

THE WELL GOLF SOCIETY
Our final outing of the year takes place next Saturday, Oct 11th at Dunmore East Golf Club. It’s also Captain’s Prize day for our society captain, Pat Woodlock, so a large turnout is expected. The good news is that tee-off is at 9am, so early to bed on Friday night.

To say we were delighted by the success of our golf classic would be an understatement. We never cease to be amazed by the generosity of people, from our main sponsor South East Scaffolding to all the business people and individuals who sponsored teams, tee boxes and prizes. Without your support, this would not have been possible, we must also thank Kevin and Margaret Lalor of Slievenamon Golf Club for their facilities. Also club captain Des Delahunty and a special thanks to Brendan Kenny for his support over the two days. Thanks to all who helped out in any way in organising the golf classic, especially our chief organiser Chris Coen, who did trojan work during the last few weeks. Results for Progressive 25 game played on Friday 3rd October in Fethard Ballroom. Winners: Chris O'Brien and Chas Keane on 12 games. RESULTS OF GOLF CLASSIC
Last weekend a very successful Golf Classic was run at Slievenamon Golf Club in aid of TRUST, a charity for the homeless run by Alice Leahy who is formerly from Annsgift, Fethard. Alice was present on Saturday night for the prizegiving ceremony which was compared by RTE sports presenter, Peter Collins. Alice thanked the main organisers, Frank Purcell and Vincent Murphy for their wonderful work in organising sponsorship and teams for the event, she also thanked Slievenamon Golf Club’s secretary Brendan Kenny and Club Captain, Des Delahunty, for their help in running the event and organising the course and timesheets etc. In reply, Club Captain Des Delahunty, said he was delighted to be able to help such a worthy cause and invited the organisers back for another Golf Classic next year. RTE sports presenter and MC for the night, Peter Collins, spoke of the wonderful work that Alice achieves while working with the homeless in Dublin and how the funds raised will help so many people live a better quality of life over the next year.
Alice has recently published a new book, ‘With Trust in Place’, which will be officially launched by RTE presenter Pat Kenny at 6pm on Tuesday 14th October at the City Hall, Dame Street, Dublin 2. The book is written on the theme of ‘the outsider’ with contributions from many well-known writers such as Maeve Binchy and Christy Moore. This is her second book, her first book being, ‘Not just a bed for the night’ published by Marino in 1995 and written with Anne Dempsey.

HARVEST FESTIVAL
All are invited to the Annual Harvest Thanksgiving Service that will take place in the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland, Main Street, on this Friday night, October 10, at 8pm.

CHRISTMAS FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS
The Irish Countrywomen’s Association will hold their next meeting on Tuesday 14th October in the ICA Hall at 8pm. Mary Joe Murphy from Maigue Flower Club in Adare will demonstrate some floral arrangements suitable for Christmas. All are welcome. Admission to non-members is €5. Hostesses for the night are the Red Group. Competition theme is ‘Last Blooms of Summer.
Please note that the demonstration will begin at 8pm sharp, before the meeting.

BUS SERVICE
Good news for passengers who regularly use the Thurles-Fethard-Clonmel Shamrock bus service. From 1st October, there is a full service each day from Monday to Saturday. Heretofore, the bus, which was put on service when the Thurles-Clonmel railway line closed down, did not operate on Wednesday or Thursday. This meant there was no service provided on Thursday. Fethard now will have a bus to Clonmel on Thursdays for the first time since the service was established.
Departure times from Fethard to Clonmel are, 9.10am, 1.10pm 4.10pm and 8.10pm. Departure times from Fethard to Thurles are 8am, 11.45am, 3.50pm and 6.20pm. The departure times from Clonmel to Thurles are approximately 30 minutes before the Fethard times.

FETHARD GAA CLUB
Our senior footballers made their exit from the county championship on Sunday last in Clonmel on a scoreline, Fethard 0-5 (0-1), Cahir 0-8 (0-4), in the county Semifinal replay. It is ironic that since we last won the county championship in 2001, we’ve lost in 2002 and 2003 in semifinal replays almost by the same margin. The team on Sunday last was: Paul Fitzgerald, Damien Byrne 0-1, Michael Aherne, Cian Maher, Tomas Keane, Michael Quinlan, Stephen O’Donnell, Aiden Fitzgerald, P J Aherne, Brian Coen 0-2 (1f), Willie Morrissey, Michael Dillon, Jimmy O’Meara, Miceál Spillane and John P Looby. Subs used were: Glen Burke 0-2f, Thomas Anglim, Conor McCarthy, Willie Morrissey and Kenneth Byrne. We wish Cahir the very best in the county final. Our remaining game is in the county league semifinal against Moyle Rovers at a date, time and place to be arranged.
The Intermediate Hurling South Final will not be played for a few weeks as we await our opposition.
The Lotto Jackpot of €1,200 was not won. We had six match three winners who received €25 each: Annette McCarthy (Main Street); David Lawton (St Patricks Place); Tom Gilpin (The Valley); Chris, Tommy and Jody Sheehan (1 Woodvale Walk); Dermot O’Meara (63 Woodvale Walk); and Joe Hanly (Coleman). The €50 Lucky Dip went to Liam McGrath (c/o Campbell’s Soup Thurles).

FETHARD RUGBY CLUB NOTES
We played our first game of the season in Fethard on Sunday morning last Our U112 had a great victory over Waterpark by 7 tries to five. The foundation for this win was a great display by our forwards of which Sam Manton, Kevin Hayes, Jerome Ahearne, Michael John Murphy and the try scoring Mark Ronan were very impressive. These players gave a great supply of ball back to both scrumhalves who played Conor Kavanagh and Johnny Grassick. This set up some great back movements with Paraic O'Shea, Paul Tierney, Jack O'Connell and Daniel Hickey, making some great runs.
A bright aspect to this game wins the great tackling of Glen Maher, Ben Walsh and Andrew Kelly. We have training as usual on Saturday morning at 11.00am, however, some coaches will be gone on a coaching course. On Sunday we have matches for U/8, U/10, U/12 and U/13 against Cashel in Fethard at 11.00am.

Soccer- Youths
Killusty Hit For Five
In a game Killusty needed to win at home after a poor start to the season they would have hoped for a better result. St. Michaels who also had not started the season brightly had other ideas and Killusty found themselves going in at half time 2-0 down. A further three goals followed in the second half without reply and Killusty had conceded five goals, an improvement is needed quickly or Killusty will be facing relegation worries at the end of the season. Final score Killusty 0, St. Michaels 5.

Munster Junior Cup - 1st Round
Killusty had an easy passage to the 2nd round of the Munster Junior Cup when they had an easy win over 4th division team, St. Kevins.
Sunday 12th October, fixture list league, division 1, Killusty V Clonmel Celtic. Saturday 11th October = Munster Youth cup, 1st round, Killusty V Bansha Celtic.
